WLAN growth projected to steal revenue share from campus Ethernet switching

Dell'Oro Group's latest research finds vendors now introducing unified Ethernet/WLAN products to simplify deployment and management of customers’ networks.

A new forecast report by networking and telecommunications industries analyst firm Dell’Oro Group reveals that the Enterprise Edge market is expected to exceed $15 billion in by 2017. Significantly, for the analyst, Enterprise Edge now defines the part of the communications market that includes enterprise-class wireless LAN (WLAN) and campus Ethernet switching equipment and related software. “Enterprises are now emphasizing wireless LAN connectivity as a primary means of connecting workers to the corporation,” asserts Chris DePuy, vice president of Enterprise Edge research at Dell’Oro Group.

The firm's latest research finds vendors now introducing unified Ethernet/WLAN products to simplify deployment and management of customers’ networks. At the same time, new access networks are being built by new customer types such as retailers and in hospitality markets, and new networks are being built by traditional enterprises as they deploy new buildings. Many specialized vendors have thrived by serving customers of these “greenfield” network opportunities, finds the research.

Dell’Oro's new Enterprise Edge Five-Year Forecast Report addresses the trend towards convergence of wired Ethernet and wireless LAN. The report includes the following segments: Enterprise WLAN Access Points; Enterprise Controllers (wireless and wired); Campus ‘Edge’ Ethernet Switches; and Access Management Software. Separate breakouts of Ethernet Switch and Wireless LAN are provided, detailing manufacturers’ revenue, active connections, and average selling prices.

Dell'Oro's DePuy concludes, “While we have decided to research the WLAN and Ethernet Edge market on a combined basis, in this market we call Enterprise Edge, we will continue to research WLAN and Ethernet separately as well. We foresee relatively steady growth for the overall segment as enterprises expand wireless access and maintain switched access.” For more information, contact Dell’Oro Group at +1.650.622.9400 or visit www.DellOro.com.
