7. Personal devices bombard wireless LANs

The phenomenon has become known as BYOD - Bring Your Own Device. It is a name for the crush of personally owned wireless devices - tablets in particular - being brought into enterprise network environments with the owners' expectation of WiFi connectivity. The last chapter of this book certainly has not yet been written. A frequent contributor of ours, Oberon president Scott Thompson, has chronicled the evolving situation for us. In his articles he has discussed the growing reliance of tablets and smartphones on corporate wireless networks, why it looks like the situation will only get more intense, and what we might be able to do about it.
