Flexible cable accommodates 288 fibers in 18.4-mm OD

AFL’s SubUnitized Premise MicroCore 3.0 is aimed at data center, central office and other high-performance environments.

AFL recently launched the SubUnitized Premise MicroCore 3.0 set of cables, the latest addition to its Premise MicroCore product line. The company characterizes the cables as “ideal for data centers, central offices and other high-performance applications,” adding that the cables provide greater fiber density in a compact and easy-to-manage 3.0-mm frame. “By using a 24-fiber loose-tube design, MicroCore can house up to 288 fibers while maintaining a flexible form, thereby optimizing space in a new or existing routing infrastructure.” According to a specification sheet, the 288-fiber cable has an outside diameter of 18.4 mm.

The company further explained that MicroCore 3.0 provides users with a 400-percent increase in pathway capacity when compared to 900-micron tight-buffered options, and the MicroCore 3.0’s loose-tube design affords easier cable management than stacked ribbon cables. “Through its use, the cable’s smaller diameter optimizes data center airflow and provides greater cooling efficiency,” AFL added.

Like other MicroCore products, each loose tube subunit of the MicroCore 3.0 is independently qualified as a standalone interconnectivity cable suitable for direct termination with a round-boot MTP or used in complex routing of top-of-rack or side-rack installations, the company also said.
