ADC Telecommunications Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) announced its $7.75 million acquisition of Photonics Applications Inc., a Connecticut-based company specializing in high-performance fiber-optic transmission technology for cable- and wireless-communications networks. The company will become part of the ADC Broadband Communications division, a designer and manufacturer of integrated voice-, data-, and video-service delivery systems.

(San Jose, CA) announced that its subsidiary, Touche Electronics Inc., a manufacturer and assembler of custom- designed metal cabinets and enclosures for original equipment manufacturers, intends to buy Pen Interconnect Inc. (San Jose, CA), a manufacturer of wire and cable harnesses.

Proxim Inc. (Mountain View, CA), a supplier of wireless data communications products, recently announced a technology alliance with Toshiba Corp. (Tokyo, Japan), a manufacturer of mobile computing products. Under the agreement, Toshiba will sell a family of products that uses Proxim`s RangeLAN2 wireless and local area network (LAN) technology, including PC card and wireless-LAN infrastructure products, as well as mobile computers with fully integrated RangeLAN2 technology.

Hitachi Cable Manchester Inc. (Manchester, NH), a manufacturer and seller of copper-based and fiber-optic cable, announced three recent promotions: Ronald J. Ruggiero, who joined the company eight years ago as product manager, was named senior vice president of operations; Kenneth B. Glander, who joined Hitachi in 1987, was named vice president of sales and marketing; and Brian A. Griggs, a 10-year Hitachi employee, was appointed vice president of engineering.

Hoffman (Anoka, MN) has named Del Nickel president of Hoffman Engineering, a manufacturer of electrical and electronic enclosures. A graduate of North Dakota State University, Nickel was the company`s vice president of sales and marketing.

Stuart W. Mackiernan has been named vice president of marketing for the communications division, western operations, of General Instrument Corp. (San Diego, CA). Formerly the president of Telecom Solutions International Corp. (McLean, VA), Mackiernan will lead market and product development for commercial, private-business and consumer-satellite products, as well as distance-learning networks.

John Griffin, with more than 21 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, has been named vice president of marketing for the Network Services Div. of ADC Telecommunications Inc. (Minneapolis, MN). Griffin will work at the division in Richardson, TX, and will be responsible for marketing loop-access and transport systems. ADC is a supplier of transmission and networking systems used to deliver voice, data, and video services.
