Distributor Anicom Inc. (Rosemont, IL) has purchased Carolina Cable & Connector Inc. (Raleigh, NC) for approximately $3.5 million in a combination of cash and stock. This brings to eight the number of acquisitions made by Anicom since July 1995. Carolina Cable & Connector sells and distributes wire and cable, fiber-optic products, and computer-network and connectivity products.

Connector and component manufacturer Thomas & Betts Corp. (Memphis, TN) recently announced plans to complete its acquisition of the Newburyport, MA-based Taylor Wiring Duct business from Gould-Shawmut. Taylor is a supplier of wiring duct and accessories to the industrial original-equipment-manufacturer market.

Fiber Optic Network Solutions Corp. (fons--Northborough, MA) has been awarded a three-year contract to supply Bell Atlantic Network Services Inc. with fiber-optic premises equipment. Bell Atlantic`s telephone companies will deploy fons`s pre-wired interconnect products at locations where fiber-optic cable is being installed directly at a business site. fons will provide wall-mounted patch panels for direct termination and splicing of fiber-optic cable.

Alcatel Telecom plans to open a new branch of its research division in the Dallas suburb of Richardson, TX. Company officials say the action reinforces the importance of the link between Alcatel Network Systems, which is headquartered in that area, and Alcatel`s telecommunications business. The Richardson center will form part of Alcatel Telecom`s international network of almost 700 researchers working in such areas as software, optical communications, radio communications, networking, and fundamental technology.

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corp. (Research Triangle Park, NC) recently announced a 15-year warranty for its FutureFlex air-blown fiber product. The guarantee states that the product meets the tia/eia-568a standard for bandwidth and attenuation in optical-fiber data-transmission applications. Sumitomo is a supplier of optical-fiber cable and related products.
