White paper debates merits of 62.5- vs. 50-micron multimode fiber

OFS paper examines the differences between the two fiber sizes, while comparing their capabilities.

A new white paper authored by John Kamino, product manager with OFS, asks the question: When upgrading an existing multimode fiber-optic cabling system within a data center, LAN, or other enterprise application -- many of which have 62.5-micron multimode fiber already installed -- is it better to stick with 62.5-micron multimode, or to switch to the higher performance of 50-micron OM3 or OM4 fiber?

The paper goes on to compare the specific properties that distinguish the two fiber sizes, and to weigh the relative merits of each, with regard to shorter and longer distance applications and higher and lower laser bandwidth capabilities. The discussion also examines options for mixing the two fiber types, and challenges associated with this scenario.
