Report: Fiber-optic fusion splicer sales jump in 2010

Aug. 16, 2010
In terms of volume, the number of new fusion splicers put into action is on track for an increase of 12 percent versus 2009, says Electronicast.

ElectroniCast Consultants has released the second of two study reports in 2010 covering the worldwide market for fiber-optic fusion splicers. Since the first report released in March 2010 report, the industry is finding expanded and even new market opportunities, the market and technology research consultancy says.

“In terms of volume, the number of new fusion splicers put into action is on track for an increase of 12 percent versus 2009. Also, as we reported in our March 2010 report, the use of fusion splicers in the production (manufacturing) of fiber-optic components is showing stronger growth, on track for an increase of 16 percent versus the volume in 2009,” said Stephen Montgomery, president of international business at ElectroniCast Consultants.

When it comes to handheld/rugged fusion splicers, the telecommunications industry sector remains the market share leader in terms of worldwide consumption value in 2010, the study reveals. Also according to the research, the fastest growth during the 2009-2014 timeframe will be in the specialty applications, as well as in the fiber optic component manufacturing production lines.

“More and more of the rugged smaller handheld splicers are finding their way into use,” Montgomery added. “Based on recent interviews of FTTx installation managers, there is increase in novice technicians in the last-mile installation arena, and the clad-alignment splicer modules are increasingly popular. The crew chiefs increasingly are seeing the value of using the smaller rugged-type of fusions splicers; however, the use of pre-terminated connector cable assemblies, as well as using field-installable connectors and/or mechanical splices, is still strongly considered in many areas. Also, a strong consideration to go with a more expensive grade of fusion splicer is often seen as mandatory.”

The Fiber Optic Fusion Splicer Global Market Forecast (2009-2014) is available immediately, at a fee of $5,800. The report presents a forecast of global market consumption value, volume (quantity), and average selling price of fiber-optic fusion splicers machines in optical communication applications.
