Fiber-optic cabling capabilities addressed in web seminar

Dec. 2, 2010
Attendees can earn one continuing education credit for BICSI designations.

A web seminar to be held December 15 will discuss the growing capabilities of fiber-optic cabling systems, and the best practices that should accompany these new capabilities. Entitled "Fiber-Optic Cabling and Networking Technologies" and hosted by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, the web seminar will include three presentations, as follows.

  • What media conversion can do for you
  • The growing importance of fiber polarity
  • Testing fiber-optic systems

In the first presentation, Steve Frank of EtherWAN Systems will explain why media-conversion technologies are becoming like a Swiss Army knife for networking applications because of their ability to support numerous applications. Those capabilities make it important for users to select appropriate media converters for their jobs, and Frank will provide insight into how to make such choices.

Then Sharon Lutz of US Conec will describe what polarity is and why the use of preterminated fiber assemblies and cassettes is bringing polarity into focus. She will also explain the options that are available to ensure polarity is maintained in multi-fiber systems.

Finally, Varis Hicks of EXFO will present the best practices you can take to ensure a fiber-optic infrastructure can support the many applications for which it may be deployed. His presentation looks at the tools and methods available to test fiber-optic circuits.

Attendees of the seminar who hold the RCDD, Installer 2, Technician or Certified Trainer designation from BICSI can earn one continuing education credit toward those designations by attending the seminar in its entirety. After the live broadcast on December 15, the seminar will be available for on-demand viewing for six months.
