FirstLight Fiber acquires colocation provider ColoSpace

Dec. 12, 2019
The communications provider says the acquisition bolsters its data center, cloud and managed-services offerings.

FirstLight, a provider of fiber-optic data, internet, data center, cloud computing, unified communications, advanced technologies and construction services to enterprise and carrier customers in the Northeast U.S., recently acquired ColoSpace. ColoSpace, which is headquartered in Massachusetts, is a regional provider of colocation, managed IT services, cloud solutions, and disaster-recovery services in New England.

“The acquisition of ColoSpace fits well with our strategy of continuing to enhance our capabilities, and as such, it is an ideal match,” said Kurt Van Wagenen, FirstLight’s president and chief executive officer. “Its data centers, located in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, are in the heart of our service territory, and in fact, are currently connected to FirstLight’s fiber network. ColoSpace’s product portfolio is not only complementary but deepens and expands our service portfolio. Now that this transaction is complete, we have added four data centers, with nearly 20,000 square feet of space, to our 11 existing, strategically located facilities. In addition, ColoSpace’s expertise in cloud and managed IT services will enhance our capabilities to the benefit of our customers.”

FirstLight was founded in 1999 and serves national telecom providers, competitive local exchange carriers, and enterprises such as healthcare organizations, manufacturing and research facilities, financial institutions, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, public-safety agencies, as well as local and state governments.

Aaron D. Sawchuk, co-founder and chairman of ColoSpace, will remain with the organization to help lead the company’s data center and cloud business. Sawchuk commented, “Since founding ColoSpace nearly 20 years ago, we have been singularly focused on delivering high-quality, innovative solutions to our customers. As enterprise cloud adoption continues to accelerate exponentially, comprehensive IT solutions coupled with scalable, low-latency connectivity has become increasingly important to our clients. FirstLight, with its unparalleled fiber network and communications capabilities, is the ideal organization to enable our clients to benefit from these technology trends.”
