The 500-page document includes new information on modular data centers, DCIM, hot-and-cold aisles, and other technical data center issues.

BICSI recently released an updated version of its flagship data center standard ANSI/BICSI 002-2014 Data Center Design and Implementation Best Practices. When announcing its release, the association said, “Data center construction and expansion is predicted to continue steadily over the next 10 years worldwide. With the increasing focus on reliability and efficiency, the initial design is more important than ever. Thus, today’s data center designer is required to have knowledge of mechanical, electrical and telecommunications systems and how they interact—areas not typically found in the same reference manual or standard.”

BICSI characterizes its 002 data center standard as “the foundation standard for data center design around the world,” adding that the document provides requirements, guidelines and best practices that are applicable to any data center. “Now featuring 500 pages of content, the 2014 edition of BICSI 002 focuses on adding or expanding information on critical data center design and infrastructure topics, including modular and ‘container’ data centers; data center infrastructure management (DCIM) and building systems; DC power; hot and cold aisles; multi-data center architecture and data center service outsourcing; and energy efficiency,” BICSI explained.

Michael Collins, RCDD, RTPM, CCDA, NCE, BICSI’s president, commented about the data center standard, “This updated standard is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work performed by an international team of more than 50 volunteer subject matter experts from all disciplines within data centers. The volunteers also spent countless hours reviewing the existing content from the 2011 edition to reflect changes and developments in the major data center markets. BICSI 002-2014 is an essential standard that belongs in any data center professional’s reference library.”

BICSI has made a preview version of Chapters 1 through 5 of its revised data center standard available here.

In print or electronic version, the standard costs $395 for BICSI members and $495 for non-members. You can find more information on the standard here, and purchase it here.
