Aquantia develops Quad 10GBASE-T PHY

May 11, 2009 -- 10GBASE-T silicon provider Aquantia announced the validation of its 40-nm Quad 10GBASE-T PHY. The company says the chip delivers the critical power, density and cost performance levels required by server, switch and storage equipment manufacturers for volume deployment in the data center ecosystem.

The company says the chip delivers the critical power, density and cost performance levels required by server, switch and storage equipment manufacturers for volume deployment in the data center ecosystem.

The company says the versatile PHY minimizes power consumption to a couple of Watts per port for cable connectivity within the rack in data center deployments, making it a suitable alternative to cumbersome, more expensive SFP+ solutions.

"IT data center and distributed network managers need universal, scalable and affordable high-speed copper connectivity, to match the growing dominance of 10GE servers and switches in their networks," comments Aquantia president and CEO Faraj Aalaei. Key characteristics of the PHY include: IEEE 802.3an compliance; 2.0W per port at 10m Cat6A/Cat7; 3.5W per port at 100m Cat6A/Cat7; multi-rate 10G/1G/100M capability; and a high-performance XAUI/RXAUI/XFI interface. Early customer samples will be available in the second half of 2009.

Aquantia's achievement in the 40-nm process node, together with its announcement of a product family ranging from single to quad-port devices, adds to its prior demonstration of 90-nm process technology, the AQ1002 architecture, which is currently shipping to major OEM customers. Aquantia says the 40-nm technology proves that its differentiated architecture can scale effectively to the next advanced process node, bringing together the benefits of high energy efficiency and high density needed for emerging LAN on Motherboard (LOM) and high-density switching implementations.

Aquantia will demonstrate its 10GBASE-T product line at Interop Las Vegas 2009, May 17-21.
