The 1996 Atlantic hurricane season was the first since 1965 in which every tropical cyclone attained tropical storm intensity. The season produced a total of 13 named storms and 9 hurricanes. The most intense hurricane, Edouard, was a powerful Cape Verde-type storm that affected portions of the Mid-Atlantic states and New England. A total of 6 major hurricanes formed during 1996 -- the highest number produced in a single Atlantic season since 1961.
