Color-Coded Fiber-Optic Connectivity System for Extreme High Densities

Legrand says its Chroma Link color-indexed system allows data center managers to ‘stop following cables and start following color.’

Legrand recently introduced Chroma Link, a color-coded or color-indexed high-density fiber-optic cabling system the company says can save network administrators valuable hours by streamlining cable management practices. When announcing the product line, Legrand explained, “As AI workloads drive connector density to unprecedented levels, traditional patching methods have become a critical bottleneck. Current installation processes for a single hyper-dense application can consume a week of labor due to the complexity of manually tracing individual connections. Chroma Link addresses this inefficiency by enabling technicians to stop following cables and start following color.”

Chroma Link’s color-indexing system runs end-to-end, matching colored ports on the enclosure with identical color coding on trunks and harnesses. This color coding allows installers and technicians to visually identify paths from the server rack to the leaf switch, or the leaf switch to the spine, in mesh networks, Legrand said. “By transforming the patch field into a straightforward visual roadmap, the system significantly reduces the risk of human error and minimizes the time required for deployment and maintenance,” it added.

Initially offered in singlemode, with a multimode version planned, Chroma Link “introduces a new way of thinking about fiber management,” according to Legrand’s vice president of data infrastructure Sabrina Snyder. “As networks scale to support AI and machine learning, density is exploding, and so is complexity. This solution brings clarity to the patch field, giving installers a visual system that dramatically shrinks timelines, and makes hyper-dense environments far more manageable.”

It is an end-to-end system, comprising enclosures, trunks, and harnesses supporting 2304 fibers in a 1RU enclosure and 4608 fibers in 2Rus. It includes Senko’s SN-MT connectivity, which condenses Base-I connections into Base-16 connectors. Its color-coding scheme complies with the ANSI/TIA-598-D Optical Fiber Cable Color Coding standard.
