EXFO adds bi-directional fiber testing to OTDR platform

Feb. 18, 2013
Patent-pending testing functionality simplifies the complex, time-consuming bi-directional measurements required for a true splice-loss assessment.

EXFO has announced the addition of bidirectional testing capabilities to its intelligent Optical Link Mapper (iOLM) fiber characterization technology. The company says the patent-pending functionality simplifies the time-consuming task of performing bidirectional measurements at multiple wavelengths and pulse widths, presenting clear OTDR pass/fail results in a single link view. The iOLM platform enhancement is designed to speed up in-field fiber-optic testing and reporting for frontline cabling technicians.

The OTDR-based iOLM software application uses an automated multipulse acquisition approach and advanced algorithms to deliver detailed information on every element on the link, claims the company, providing maximum intelligence and simplicity for expert-level link characterization. Powered by the company's Link-Aware technology, EXFO says its proprietary iOLM self-manages the setting of all test parameters, requiring virtually no training for technicians of any skill level.

"Since its launch in 2011, our intelligent Optical Link Mapper technology has gained great market acceptance in all network applications," comments Etienne Gagnon, vice-president of EXFO's Test and Measurement division. "Logically, our customers are requesting the same efficiency and simplified work process for their bidirectional tests, and this is what we are delivering today. Adding bidirectional testing to our innovative iOLM makes it the most efficient fiber characterization solution in the industry."
