June 30, 2003 - Company's SYSTIMAX Structured Cabling Solutions were used for events in Ireland.

Avaya Inc. provided the cabling infrastructure to support the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Ireland.

The games took place between June 16-29. The cabling, made at Avaya's European cabling centre in Bray, County Dublin, was used to network the 52 event sites across the republic and Northern Ireland. Avaya's SYSTIMAX Structured Connectivity Solutions were used to underpin the network to support and manage the 7,000 athletes, 30,000 volunteers and 1,500 media representatives attending the event.

The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games hosted athletes with learning disabilities from 160 countries worldwide. The communications infrastructure for the games utilized Avaya's SYSTIMAX SCS cabling which supported the critical system applications required for the efficient running of the event.

The SYSTIMAX SCS cabling infrastructure supported the Medical Management System that holds athletes' medical records. Due to the nature of the event, access to medical records at all times is vital. The SYSTIMAX PowerSUM copper solution is designed to provide an advanced and easily installed copper cabling network. The SYSTIMAX OptiSPEED and LazrSPEED fiber cabling solution is designed to ensure reliability with 99% network uptime delivering fast transmission speeds over extended distances.

The SYSTIMAX SCS solution also supported the Games Management System, a vital application that ran over a local area network, processing participants and event data, to produce contestant lists for each division. In addition, the solution hosted the Volunteer Management System which controlled the movements of more than 30,000 volunteers as well as supporting the Main Press Centre based in the Royal Dublin Society.

Avaya has been working closely with Authorised SYSTIMAX BusinessPartner, Kedington to install the cabling solution into existing sporting venues in the Dublin region. The solution includes Nortel core switches running Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-SX in the backbone over OptiSPEED and LazrSPEED fiber links.

Avaya is based in Basking Ridge, NJ. For more information visit www.avaya.ie.
