ETL launches training for installers, inspectors

Dec. 6, 2001
December 6, 2001 Current offerings provide information on twisted-pair and fiber-optic installation, as well as inspection techniques.

The ETL Semko division of Intertek Testing Services (www.etlsemko.com) now offers a series of cabling-installation and inspection training courses to contractors, inspectors, and cabling professionals. The courses provide tips on installation techniques, and are valid for continuing education credits from BICSI.

"Contractors, inspectors, consultants, and executives will benefit from our small class size and relevant curricula," said Don Nicholson, general manager of ITS ETL Semko.

Current course offerings are "Cat 5, 5e, and 6 Installation, Testing, and Verification"; "Hands-on Fiber Optics"; and "VDV Cabling Systems Inspection Techniques for Electrical Inspectors."

Nicholson commented, "Cabling systems are low-voltage applications, but an improperly installed system can still have a devastating effect on life safety, power quality, and surrounding electronic equipment. Inspectors, contractors, and others working primarily with electrical systems may not be as familiar with cabling system codes and standards. This course will give them the knowledge and hands-on techniques they need to safely install and inspect these increasingly popular systems."

Upon completion of each course, participants must pass an exam to receive a course-completion certificate.

The first course was held November 8 and 9 at the Graybar location in Glendale Heights, IL. Sessions and locations will be added based on the number of registrations and interest. Companies may also opt to host training at their own locations.
