November 17, 2008 -- At SC 08, SMC Networks introduced what it calls a complete Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) product line, with the release of its TigerSwitch 24-Port 10G managed switch with (20) 10GBASE-T and (4) XFP Ports (SMC8724-10BT), and its Tiger Card 10G PCIe 10GbE 10GBASE-T server adapter (SMC10GPCIe-10BT).

The products target SMBs and enterprises seeking to implement 10 Gbps connectivity over Cat 6a copper cables.

The SMC TigerSwitch 10G (SMC8724-10BT) is an IEEE 802.3an compliant switch that operates over a100 meter reach over Cat 6a cable on each of its 20 10GBASE-T ports, enabling next generation data centers with high-performance 10 Gbps bandwidth in a copper-based solution. Four XFP transceiver ports support SR, LR and ER fiber connections for extended range connectivity.

The SMC Tiger Card 10G (SMC10GPCIe-10BT) is a 10 Gbps Ethernet server adapter that runs on a high speed PCI Express 1.1 x8 host bus interface. The half-height card offers flexible server installation with brackets for half- or full-height. The SMC10GPCIe-10BT provides an extensive set of features including: virtual NIC support, IP/UDP/TCP checksum offload, stateless offloads, plug-and-play support, Jumbo Frame support, MSI, remote boot, IP flow filtering, and transmit rate pacing (per queue), as well as support for Accelerating Virtual environments and OpenOnload.

The SMC TigerSwitch 10G (SMC8724-10BT) and Tiger Card 10G (SMC10GPCIe-10BT) are available at prices in the U.S. starting at $29,999.99 and $1,399.99 MSRP, respectively.

"The release of our new 10G-over-Ethernet solution is of particular excitement to us and our customers as it is the industry's first 10GBASE-T solution to ship to the market," comments Iain Kenney, director of product marketing for SMC Networks. "As a growing number of companies realize the need for higher data throughput speeds to support applications such as virtualization, multimedia content streaming and transferring of large data files, Gigabit Ethernet solutions are becoming inadequate and the ability to transfer data at 10 Gbps speeds over the existing Ethernet infrastructure is a very attractive solution that delivers both performance and cost-savings."
