Web-based seminar addresses 'green' cabling

June 3, 2008
June 3, 2008 -- The CIM-produced event seeks to clarify, not further confuse, issues surrounding cabling and environmental responsibility.

A seminar presented live via the Web on May 14 discussed cabling systems' role in corporate "green" initiatives and vice versa. The seminar, entitled Green Cabling and produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, featured presentations from Michelle Carter of Corning Cable Systems, John Schmidt of ADC, and Vinnie Jain of Ortronics/Legrand. The three organizations also sponsored the event.

Carter paid specific attention to the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and how it relates to structured cabling systems. Schmidt focused on products and technologies being used today that may not be factors in LEED certification, but can significantly affect a cabling system's, and specifically a data center's, energy efficiency. Jain discussed some best practices for cabling-system designers and technicians, and also provided some detail on the Environmental Protection Agency's data-center-specific initiatives.

A lively question-and-answer period following the presentations further discussed LEED, the EPA, and bad cable management, a subject Schmidt addressed in his presentation.

The seminar is available for viewing free of charge. The audio portion can also be downloaded as an MP3 file, at no cost. Those who wish to view the presentations and/or download the audio file must register.

Separately, Cabling Installation & Maintenance chief editor Patrick McLaughlin recently ranted about the collision of cabling and all things green. You can read his comments here.
