June 13, 2008 -- As part of its infrastructure line for server and computer centers, Dätwyler Cables is offering its Ecobus flat-cable safety system, billed as a flexible energy supply to IT cabinets.

According to the company, designed for integration into all cable conduit systems, with the Ecobus, energy can be supplied to or tapped from the flat cable at any point, without the cable being interrupted. Changes can be made while the cable is live; the fuses offer good selectivity and are positioned directly at the end-user terminals. For new installations and extensions, cabling costs may be reduced by up to 80 percent, says the company. Also, by replacing many single cables with the Ecobus system, power supplies may prove more effective and durable.

The company notes that a star topology power supply to IT cabinets uses an inordinate number of individual cables and can be difficult to modify. In addition, in this arrangement, cables are often heaped upon one another and tend to get hot, adversely affecting their carrying capacity and causing them to age more quickly. However, the company maintains that its Ecobus flat-cable safety system can be used to create a neat, flexible, long-term infrastructure for standard power supplies as well as UPS systems.

The system can be attached to cable conduit systems above the rack by using cable clamps. Depending on the energy supply required, Dätwyler offers cables with diameters from 2.5 to 16 mm sq. Energy can be supplied to or tapped from the flat cable at any point by the means of special adapters, without the cable being interrupted. Connections can be realized via screw or plug type, and wiring can take place even while the cable is live. Fuses are positioned directly at end-user terminals.

The company concludes that, by using the Ecobus flat-cable system, power cables can be successively set up without interrupting the computer center's operations; they can also be easily rearranged or extended. Dätwyler Cables provides halogen-free Pyrofil safety cables for supplying the flat-cable safety systems. For cabinet-monitoring systems, the Ecobus flat-cable systems can also be supplied with an integrated or separate flat-cable data bus.
