June 2, 2008 -- The Fiber Optic Association Inc. (FOA), the professional society of fiber optics, has added a new technical bulletin to its website that offers guidance for those designing fiber-optic networks.

The document was written for use in training for the new FOA Fiber Optic Design Certification, but will be useful for all contractors, installers, architects and engineers, project managers, and others who are involved with projects that include fiber optics.

The 30-page document covers the design process in 15 separate topics, from deciding if fiber optics is right for a network, through how to design, install and maintain a fiber-optic network. The material covers both premises and outside plant networks for almost any application, the FOA says.

The technical bulletin "Designing Fiber Optic Networks" can be downloaded from the FOA Tech Topics website at http://www.thefoa.org/tech.

The FOA is a non-profit educational organization chartered to promote fiber optics through education, certification and standards. Over 200 FOA-approved schools around the world have certified over 24,000 fiber optic technicians. The FOA offers free online introductory fiber optic tutorials and training for instructors at FOA-approved schools.
