Wiremold/Legrand upgrades firestop fittings, intros retrofit kit

June 15, 2006
June 15, 2006 -- The company's FlameStopper thru-wall fittings have been re-designed for use in retrofit and new construction firestopping applications.

Wiremold/Legrand's FlameStopper thru-wall fittings have been re-designed for use in retrofit and new construction firestopping applications. The company says the fittings now combine built-in intumescent material with a fully enclosed wall penetration that allows wires and cables to be easily added or removed while maintaining the fire rating of the wall.

The FlameStopper thru-wall fitting for new construction consists of a cover with adjustable steel doors that house intumescent material with an opening through which the cables pass. EMT conduit, which can be cut to length, carries the cables through the penetration to a similar cover and block of intumescent material on the opposite side of the wall. The proper amount of firestopping material is pre-loaded in the assembly, eliminating the need to apply caulk or putty. The material is entirely self contained and is not disturbed by adding or removing cables.

A newly introduced retrofit kit includes a split conduit for installations where there is no existing conduit. The kit also contains a large firestopped wall plate for irregular openings and a heat shield for existing extended conduit lengths. The company says the kit makes firestopping possible in virtually any existing condition without the need for additional firestop material.

The FlameStopper thru-wall fitting is tested to UL 1479 and ASTM E814 for flame, temperature, and smoke, and has also been determined to be suitable for use in air handling spaces (plenums). Designed for easy installation in gypsum and concrete block walls, the units are designed to work in conjunction with any cable tray.
