March 20, 2007 -- devolo AG (Aachen, Germany) has expanded its dLAN range of networking products with the addition of the dLAN 200 AV adapter, which is based on Intellon's INT6000 HomePlug AV IC.
The companies say the power-plug sized adapter represents the latest generation of in-house powerline devices which transfer data at up to 200 Mbit/sec over a household power circuit. Based on the international HomePlug AV standard, the adapter is designed to provide users with a broadband network connection at every power socket in the house, while eliminating the need for laying new cable.
"HomePlug AV has the bandwidth and robustness to deliver multiple streams of rich entertainment along with other digital traffic," comments Charlie Harris, chairman and CEO of Intellon. "This is why service providers and leading equipment manufacturers such as devolo are using Intellon's HomePlug ICs as the whole-house networking solution for multimedia entertainment and high definition IPTV rollouts."
The dLAN 200 AV adapter targets users who seek to view Internet TV and video-on-demand anywhere in the home. The companies contend that the adapter's gross bandwidth at 200 Mbit/sec is sufficient to simultaneously transport: two HDTV signals at between 66 - 84 Mbit/sec; home-theatre audio or CD audio into two rooms at between 9 - 11 Mbit/sec; and six VoIP telephone calls at 1 Mbit/sec throughout the home network, with capacity left over to transfer IP data at 10 Mbit/sec.
The adapter features 128-bit AES encryption for data security, integrated quality of service capability, and an Ethernet connector for simple integration of PCs and other Ethernet-capable devices into a home network.
Other features include a power-saving mode, which reduces power consumption by 30% when the device is not being used. Operating system support includes Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP 32, MacOS x and Linux.
"Even the shape of the dLAN 200 AV helps the customers," says Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG. "All they have to do is look at it and they know that installing the power plug will be straightforward and problem free."
