November 15, 2007 -- Solarflare Communications and SMC Networks announced that SMC will begin shipping 10GBASE-T network interface cards (NICs) and switches based on Solarflare's standards-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) silicon technology starting in Q4, 2007.
"With cost-effective, high-performance 10GBASE-T products coming to market, there is no reason not to move to 10 Gigabit performance today to meet ever increasing business demands," comments Bruce Tolley, vice president of marketing at Solarflare. "SMC shares our vision of wide-spread 10 Gigabit networking and we are delighted that products from SMC Networks based on our 10 Gigabit Ethernet controller and 10GBASE-T PHY technology will soon be available for deployment throughout data centers and enterprise networks."
According to the companies, the 10GBASE-T products deliver 10 Gigabit performance over standard Ethernet links, enabling enterprises and data centers to quickly and cost effectively upgrade to the next level of networking. Thereby, increasing business and bandwidth demands can be easily addressed with the high-speed performance necessary to support advanced applications such as high-definition video streaming, network convergence, Web 2.0 and server virtualization.

SMC says its 10 Gigabit strategy incorporates both 10G fiber and copper Ethernet switching and NIC products, aiming to drive usability and ROI into this market segment. The company's range of 10 Gigabit NICs includes 10GBASE-T and XFP models, a 10GBASE-T switch uplink for SMC switches, and a 24-port 10G switch based on the Solarflare technology, with (20) 10GBASE-T ports and (4) XFP ports.
SMC is showcasing Solarflare's wire speed virtualization acceleration over standards-based 10GBASE-T copper solutions in the SMC booth #2403 at Supercomputing 2007, being held November 12 - 15 in Reno's Spark's Convention Center.
