This year will be remembered for several unfortunate circumstances, but not all is negative. 2020 marks 40 years of IEEE 802 Ethernet standards. The University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab (UNH-IOL) commemorated the milestone by producing a “Happy Birthday Ethernet” video. There’s no singing, but there is plenty of insight from networking visionaries and experts.
In between opening and closing words from UNH-IOL director Jeff Lapak, the video includes memories and insights from technologists including Bob Noseworthy, the lab’s chief engineer; Steve Carlson, IEEE 802.3 WG’s executive secretary; Peter Jones, Cisco engineer and chair of the Ethernet Alliance; and Elizabeth Kochuparambil, Cisco technical lead.
Watch the video below to hear these experts opine and reminisce on topics including Thicknet and Thinnet, 1000Base-T PCS, 2.5 and 5GBase-T, backplane, 100Base-T2, and terabit speeds.
