12G-SDI chipset enables single-link 4K video over coax or fiber

Introduced at NAB 2014, MACOM's new adaptive cable equalizer, re-clocker and cable driver families support 4K60P on a single link.

At the 2014 NAB Show in Las Vegas, M/A-COM Technology Solutions Inc. (MACOM), a supplier of semiconductor technology for broadcast video infrastructure, unveiled six new 12G-SDI products, which the company claims comprise the industry's first complete chipset to support 12G-SDI applications.

12G-SDI is the next data rate in the evolution of the SDI standard. It is required in order to support 4K video resolutions at 60 frames per second over a single coaxial cable, or optical fiber. The six new products expand MACOM’s existing 12G-SDI technology platform, which also includes numerous crosspoint switches.

“Viewers are demanding 4K/UHDTV content to show on newer panels," comments Russell Thomas, product marketing director, high performance analog, at MACOM. "By releasing the industry’s first complete 12G-SDI chipset to complement our line of 12 Gbps crosspoints, we are giving our customers all of the key building blocks to construct 12G-SDI systems today which will support 4K on a single link.”

The new products are as follows:

-- The M23544 / M23554 / M23564 family of 12G-SDI equalizers are the industry’s first 12G adaptive cable equalizers, claims MACOM. The company says these chips set the standard for 12G reach, while supporting legacy data rates of 6G, 3G, HD and SD-SDI, as well as the MADI audio standard. Containing an integrated re-clocker, they ensure that the output jitter from the device remains low across all cable lengths. This is critical as the amount of jitter that a 12G-SDI system can tolerate is one-quarter of that of a 3G-SDI system.

-- The M23328 / M23428 family of 12G-SDI cable drivers are billed as the industry’s first 12G cable drivers. These new devices ensure that customers can meet new 12G and 6G requirements for rise / fall times and return loss. Like the aforementioned cable equalizer family, these chips support all legacy SDI data rates and the MADI audio standard.

-- The M23145 12G reclocker will reset the jitter budget at 12G and also supports legacy SDI data rates and the MADI audio standard. The platform features an integrated trace equalizer and jitter detector, all contained in a very small package.

MACOM’s 12G chipset is now sampling to development partners. The new products will be on display at the MACOM's booth #N2819 at the NAB Show, April 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
