The following information is relevant to the TIA letter addressed to the ATM Forum asking whether the Category 5 specification meets the requirements of the 155-Mbit/sec twisted-pair ATM network.

Scope Communications has performed extensive studies of the physical layer requirements of 155-Mbit/sec ATM and has presented this material to the TIA. Scope offered to present this relevant material to the ATM Forum physical layer subcommittee as part of the process of carefully considering a response to the TIA committee letter. The chairman of subcommittee agreed to allow Scope to present this material, but then drafted a response to the TIA letter before Scope Communications had an opportunity to present this material for consideration.

The minutes of the London ATM Forum meeting indicate that members of the physical layer committee asked to postpone the discussion of the TIA letter until relevant technical contributions could be presented and considered. These requests were not honored at that meeting.

Because all of the relevant technical contributions have not been presented at the ATM Forum, we do not yet believe this issue is closed. We will continue to work with the ATM Forum to make sure that all relevant technical contributions in this area are considered so that the interoperable standards that the market expects can be produced.
