AFL Introduces 16-Fiber OLTS for Hyperscale Data Centers

The FlowScout MPO OLTS, which is capable of testing duplex LCs, 8-fiber MPOs, and 12-fiber MPOs in addition to 16-fiber MPOs and 16-fiber MMCs, performs the 16-fiber test in 6 seconds.

AFL has introduced an optical loss test set (OLTS) that tests 16 fibers in 6 seconds. The FlowScout MPO OLTS “addresses the testing requirements for AI-driven hyperscale data centers,” the company said, further explaining, “As data rates have increased, the adoption of fiber infrastructure based on 16 fibers has become the standard.”

FlowScout MPO OLTS is the first OLTS that supports a 16-fiber link in a single, simple 6-second test. Current MPO OLTS test sets have been optimized for testing 12-fiber links, so require two tests to complete a 16-fiber link test.

The FlowScout MPO OLTS supports test configurations including MPO-16, MMC-16, MPO-12, and duplex LC. “FlowScout is the only MPO tester that can test duplex LC connectors,” AFL pointed out. “That eliminates the need to deploy a separate single-fiber tester.” It also alleviates the effort associated with getting clearance for test devices to enter certain facilities, particularly including hyperscale data centers. An OLTS with MPO and duplex-LC test capability allows a test crew to get clearance for just one test set rather than multiple.

“AFL has always been at the forefront of fiber-optic innovation,” said Al Swanson, vice president and chief of staff of connectivity and equipment for AFL. “Our data center customers demand innovative technology to help them speed up their fiber installation, and our FlowScout OLTS delivers this, offering significantly faster test times.”

The FlowScout MPO OLTS comprises dedicated OLS (optical light source) MPO-16 and OPM (optical power meter) MPO-16 units. Test technicians use the industry-standard duplex reference/test method. A USB-C port facilitates charging and results transfer.

The test set is available in four kits:

  • Base model: Testers + duplex test cords
  • Base model + MMC-16 reference/test cords
  • Base model + MPO-16 reference/test cords
  • Base model + MPO-12 reference/test cords

Ease-of-use features for the FlowScout MPO OLTS include a large color touchscreen with an icon-driven user interface. Advanced reporting capabilities allow users to store test results and transfer them via Bluetooth or USB, enabling cloud-based analysis using AFL’s FlexReporter software suite.

A hydraulic earth drill with a high-torque anchor handle and utility anchor adapter can significantly improve safety for anchor installation.
Enabling a one-person install, the earth drill has several advantages over manually setting drive rods or using anchor crankers.
