Washington D.C. schools seeking bids to cable-for-wireless

The city’s Department of General Services issued a request-for-proposal for cabling installs at several schools to be completed by August 1.

The Washington D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) has issued a request for proposal (RFP), from which it plans to enlist one or more contractors to install cabling systems within several of the city’s schools for the purpose of supporting wireless communications. A notification on the city DGS’s website explains, “The required work generally includes furnishing and installing new cabling. The contractor’s work will also include testing/certifying of all the new cabling as well as other associated work.”

An attachment to the RFP comprises a scope of work for the project. The following points are taken directly from that scope and are only a portion of the scope’s full context.

  • Contractor shall furnish and install new cabling, label cable locations, and provide testing/certifying of all new cabling. Cabling and jack color shall be orange.
  • Contractor is responsible to terminate and test new cable runs into the building MDF room. Depending on allowable cable run length or panel free space, contractor may have to terminate in an IDF room or patch panel room if applicable for building.
  • Run cabling from MDF/IDF room to the new AP device locations in concealed pathways, properly sized per ANSI/TIA/EIA standards.
  • Cabling shall be terminated on both ends and tested.
  • For exposed runs [no ceiling] the contractor shall install EMT conduit.

The proposal-submission deadline is May 21. The project must be completed by August 1.
