Sterlite's Stellar Fibre billed as 'universal fiber'

Oct. 21, 2019
The combination of ITU-T G.657.A2 performance and compatibility with legacy fibers makes Stellar Fibre a good choice for extending current networks as well as provisioning new networks, says its manufacturer.

At this month's India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2019, Sterlite Technologies Ltd (STL) unveiled Stellar Fibre, which the company touts as a "universal fiber."

According to STL, Stellar Fibre offers ITU-T G.657.A2 bend insensitivity -- but with a mode field diameter the size of ITU-T G.652.D fiber. Stellar Fibre thus offers bend insensitivity alongside compatibility with legacy fibers, STL says.

The combination of ITU-T G.657.A2 performance and compatibility with legacy fibers makes Stellar Fibre a good choice for extending current networks as well as provisioning new networks, from fiber to the X (FTTx) through metro and long haul, STL asserts.

The company further notes that Stellar Fibre's geometry ensures minimal splice loss and promotes proper installation. Simulations at the STL's Centre of Excellence research facility suggest that use of the fiber can increase a fiber-optic networks lifetime by 10 years or more, thanks to its resilience to cuts and accidental bends.

"We believe Stellar Fibre is an ideal product for the network operators of today who endeavor to provide their customers with a new-age, enhanced experience,” commented Ankit Agarwal, CEO-Connectivity Solutions, STL. “Dense and deep fiber networks is the need of the hour, and we hope Stellar Fibre can work as a cornerstone in making this transformation happen."
