STL launches 6912-fiber-count Celesta ribbon cable, targeting FTTH, 5G roll-outs

New “intelligently bonded” cable offers robust performance for duct installations and compatibility with high-fiber count mass fusion splicing.

STL used this month’s FTTH Europe Virtual Conference 2020 as platform to launch its Celesta Ribbon Optical Fiber Cable. The cable, which STL bills as “intelligently bonded,” comes in fiber counts as high as 6912 fibers.

Reacting to the increasing need for high-fiber-count cables, STL says it designed the Celesta ribbon cables to combine robust performance for duct installations and compatibility with high-count mass fusion splicing. According to the manufacturer, the cable is 26% slimmer than traditional loose tube cables with the same fiber counts.

The cable is optimized for blown deployments, which enables installation of up to 2000 m of fiber cable in less than an hour, the company adds. Additional attributes include the use of bend-insensitive G.657.A2 fibre, contra helical binding, and gel-free water blocking.

"We believe Celesta Ribbon Optical Fiber Cable is an ideal product for 'the new normal,' which will be characterized by accelerated network roll outs and seamless user experience,” commented Phill Coppin, STL's Associate Vice President - Technology, Connectivity Solutions.

STL says use of the Celesta ribbon cable can enable network operators to reduce roll-out time, optimize the use of duct space, shrink the size of passive network infrastructure, and improve network performance. These benefits can save as much as 32% on overall deployment investment costs, enabling operators to roll out 5G future-ready networks more efficiently, STL adds.

“STL has been a pioneer when it comes to introducing the latest technologies in fiber networks," concluded STL's Coppin. "As the world moves towards unprecedented fiberization, we will continue to build exciting and innovative products for powering the next generation of digital networks.”
