Aligned starts construction on 2nd hyperscale data center in Ashburn, VA

Aligned Energy has announced an expansion of its hyperscale data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia, beginning construction on a second 120 MW facility in the state's Loudoun County, the U.S. data center market’s epicenter.

The facilities provider says the expansion is driven by customer demand for additional capacity employing Aligned’s "Expand on Demand" infrastructure. Building on Aligned’s existing 370,000 square-foot, 60 MW Ashburn data center completed in 2019, the adjacent new 513,000 square-foot facility will add 120 MW upon completion.

At full build, Aligned says its master-planned Ashburn hyperscale campus will offer approximately 1 million square feet of space and 180 MW of capacity. The provider says the campus sits positioned atop fiber and conduit routes that offer access to more than 50 carriers in the immediate area. It is also among the few in the region that will draw critical power from multiple diverse 230kV substations for maximum redundancy, adds Aligned.

“The first phase of Aligned’s Ashburn data center campus was completed in approximately six months, and we’re now on target to deliver the initial phase of our second Ashburn facility, a fully-commissioned 40 MW, by the close of 2020,” commented Andrew Schaap, CEO of Aligned.

Aligned is a data center provider specializing in innovative, sustainable, adaptable colocation and build-to-scale facilities for cloud, enterprise, and managed service providers. The provider notes that its advanced supply chain methodology offers a simple, repeatable model for customers to expand in new or existing markets globally.

Aligned's standardized supply chain includes a 50-MW auto-replenished pool of Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), ready for immediate deployment and comprised of prefabricated, factory-built and tested power and cooling equipment. The company says its factory-produced, modular Expand on Demand infrastructure and robust supplier relationships ensure its customers can meet aggressive speed-to-market targets, while mitigating risk and deploying scalable systems to meet changing business requirements.

“Aligned’s intelligent and adaptable data center platform, combined with an advanced supply chain methodology, ensures that customers can rapidly deploy infrastructure where and when they need it, anywhere in the world,” concludes Aligned's Schlapp.
