R&M launches MPO fiber-optic cabling system for data centers

Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) has unveiled its modular "HD MPO Systems" product line.

Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) has unveiled its modular HD MPO Systems product line, its next generation fiber-optic connectivity system for data centers.

The system's core product is the HD MPO Module, a tray for coupling multi-fiber connections. The system facilitates the setup of high-density cabling systems for data networks with parallel-optical connection technology. Consequently, data centers can introduce 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) or even 40 and 100 GbE as a bandwidth to connect the fastest servers and switches to each other. The components, particularly the HD MPO Module, are installed using rapid assembly techniques. No tools are required to insert them into the subracks.

According to the company, with the MPO Modules, as many as 96 fibers can be connected in a single height unit in a 19" rack and as many as 288 fibers in three height units. In addition, R&M carries adapter plates that serve as compact patch panels to accommodate as many as 1152 fiber connections in one 19" height unit. In extreme cases, the new solution from R&M needs up to 96 percent less space than conventional cabling systems, contends the company.

R&M claims that it "has devised a totally new method for light guidance in a cabling link." The company says the news system renders complicated polarity reversal in connectors superfluous; network planning becomes easier as a result. The times needed for installation are also reduced. The only task required for upgrading the cabling to operate 40/100 GbE is to replace the modules with adapter plates in the rack. The trunk cabling remains lying in the raised floor or in the cable run and is then simply plugged in again.

The Swiss cabling specialist supplies the modules, the trunk cables and the patch cords pre-terminated as customer applications require. A data center can configure them in accordance with its own individual plans and fit them with different plugs and adapters. A typical configuration involves LC Duplex connectors on the front side for patch cabling and MPO ports for multifiber connectors on the trunk side. R&M subjects pre-terminated components and especially multifiber connectors to tough quality checks employing the strictest parameters in the world.

The decisive factor for modern data centers is that the upgrade to 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks and subsequent migration to 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet must be handled as seamlessly as possible and at a manageable cost. With the new system, R&M has calculated that the installation effort and expense per port will be reduced by 66 percent compared to previous systems.

“In today's data center, agility is key and any new cabling solution should simplify the job of the data center administrator rather than complicate it. We have identified that space savings, ease of assembly and the ability of the system to scale up to even 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet standards are now seen as essential criteria for physical infrastructure solutions. The newly developed HD MPO system satisfies all these requirements,” concludes Jean-Pierre Labry, Executive Vice-President of R&M Middle East, Turkey and Africa.
