The 1997 Atlantic hurricane season was the most recent to feature no tropical cyclones in August – typically one of the most active months. The most devastating storm was Hurricane Danny, which caused extensive flooding, particularly in southern Alabama. Danny resulted in 9 fatalities and about $100 million (1997 USD) in damage.

In 1997, the cabling industry was in a period of rapid economic growth and technological change, along with the rest of the telecom world. The residential market was undergoing rapid growth, and commercial cabling installers were fast to capitalize. The Internet was already being recognized as vital to every industry and business, and most cabling industry vendors had added home pages on the Web, if not full-fledged business sites for providing technical literature and allowing orders to be placed electronically. Low-voltage cabling disciplines such as security and surveillance, fire and life safety, and building and home automation were just beginning to converge with voice, data, and video cabling. Or rather, this convergence was increasingly coming to be seen as inevitable.

Both electricians and audio/video contractors were taking new interest in the data and telecom cabling markets. The notion of the "smart" or "intelligent" building, with all its wiring systems integrated into the same infrastructure, was already hard afoot.
