Analog Devices morphs RS-485 into SPE for smart buildings

March 17, 2023
eeNews Europe reports from the embedded world 2023 conference that Analog Devices (ADI) has developed a system that can run Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) over existing RS485 cabling in smart buildings.

eeNews Europe is reporting that Analog Devices (ADI) is currently demonstrating a system that can run Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) over existing RS485 cabling in smart buildings. The system allows building operators to run legacy protocols such as BACnet and Modbus over Ethernet infrastructure without changing the wiring.

As recorded by eeNews Europe's Nick Flaherty, the demonstration system at this week's Embedded World (EW2023) in Nuremburg, Germany runs BACnet over 10BaseT1L single pair Ethernet over a distance of up to 1km, suitable for RS-485 lines that typically run to a maximum of 400m.

The system on display combines the MAX3250 chip from Maxim Integrated, part of ADI since 2021, for protocol management, with the ADIN1110 SPE MAC and PHY transceiver which also includes fault detection.

Flaherty notes the demonstration system can be updated to run Power over Ethernet (PoE) up to 52W to power remote sensors and actuators, "although this is more likely for new build applications that still want to use the fieldbus protocols with existing equipment," adds the report.
