Light Brigade creates Advanced OSP Technician course

Nov. 19, 2018
As its name implies, the course targets the information needs of those with at least some experience handling fiber optics.

Fiber-optic training specialists Light Brigade has announced a new course, Advanced OSP Technician. As its name implies, the course targets the information needs of those with at least some experience handling fiber optics.

The four-day course begins with a review of basic fiber terminology and technology, then moves to more advanced topics such as FTTx, xWDM systems, and emergency restoration, fiber characterization, and other outside plant (OSP) skills. Students also will learn about such new fiber technologies as collapsible ribbon, 2000-micron fiber, “micro” style cables, and others. Attendees also will have ample opportunity for participation in hands-on skills labs that will focus on cable prep, splicing, and testing as they build a fiber link from patch panel to patch panel through various closures.

“Our goal was to address a request from many customers looking for an advanced course that took a deep dive into today’s outside plant skills,” explained Andy Daigle, learning and development manager for Light Brigade. “Along with preparing students for a certification exam, we wanted to give our thousands of Fiber Optics 1-2-3 graduates a great follow-on class to extend their skills and provide the perfect next step in their professional development.”

Advanced OSP Technician also prepares students for the ETA’s Fiber Optics Technician – Outside Plant (FOT-OSP) certification exam. The course requires that students have knowledge of fiber-optic theory, terminology, and field experience, or formal training such as Fiber Optics 1-2-3 or an equivalent. Light Brigade plans to begin offering the class next month, with plans to hold it in more than a dozen cities in 2019.
