VersaBeam Mini: The VSFF Expanded Beam Optical Connector

Molex recently introduced the 16-fiber connector that combines high density with EBO’s zero-touch technology to fit 3456 fibers in 1RU.

Molex used the occasion of the European Conference on Optical Communications to announce a new connector that combines the density of a very small form factory (VSFF) footprint with the contamination-resistance of expanded beam optics (EBO). Molex is beginning customer sampling in the 4th quarter of 2026 and plans for general production to begin in the first half of 2027.

The company describes VersaBeam Mini as “an ultra-compact, 16-fiber EBO connector that solves critical space, thermal, and maintenance challenges in high-density AI and hyperscale networks.” The new connector builds on Molex’s VersaBeam EBO interconnect family by combining expanded beam performance with a VSFF “to deliver the density required for next-generation AI Data centers and networking without compromising serviceability, safety, or network uptime,” the company continues.

When announcing VersaBeam Mini, Molex’s general manager for optical connectivity Trevor Smith commented, “As optical densities per rack grow exponentially, network architects are hitting hard physical walls in both scale-up GPU clusters and scale-out network fabrics. With VersaBeam Mini, we are providing a less-is-more solution that pairs a VSFF footprint with zero-touch EBO technology, delivering less contamination risk, reduced downtime, and a smaller blast radius without needing specialized technical expertise.”

The connector is designed for space-constrained co-packaged optics, optical backbones, and front-panel switch applications. Its 16 fibers fit into a 3.5x9mm footprint. “This precise form factor delivers a 3x density improvement over VersaBeam 16 connectivity, letting network architects scale up to 3456 fibers in a standard 1RU panel,” Molex said.

The company lists some of VersaBeam Mini’s capabilities and advantages as follows.

  • Maximizes front-panel real estate
  • Simplifies internal routing
  • Addresses bottlenecks associated with physical space on the panel and inside the chassis
  • Reduces blast radius by 89%

An optional mass-insertion capability allows technicians to engage up to 9 VersaBeam Mini connectors, for 144 fibers total, with one push. “This unique feature accelerates turn-up speed during initial rack deployments, while preserving granular 16-channel serviceability later on,” Molex pointed out. The 1RU density enables a modular approach to scaling and servicing ports without operational tradeoffs.

Like other products in the VersaBeam EBO portfolio, introduced in 2025, VersaBeam Mini eliminates the need for guide pins and holes.
