Uniti adds Ashburn-Pittsburgh long-haul dark fiber route for int'l hyperscaler

Nov. 2, 2021
The fiber-optic network services provider says it has signed a 20-year contract with the “large, international hyperscale customer” to provide high-strand count fiber infrastructure to connect data centers in the two locations.

Uniti Group Inc. (NASDAQ: UNIT) will open a long-haul dark fiber route between Pittsburgh, PA, and Ashburn, VA, at the behest of a new hyperscale data center operator customer.

The fiber-optic network services provider says it has signed a 20-year contract with the “large, international hyperscale customer” to provide high-strand count fiber infrastructure to connect data centers in the two locations.

The new route leverages Uniti’s fully proprietary 123,000-fiber-route-mile national network. The footprint includes the dark fiber Uniti acquired the rights to as part of its settlement agreement with Windstream.

“Uniti has always excelled at providing customized infrastructure solutions to our customers and this is another example of that. We are customizing the route for optimal line system performance and providing our customer the diversity and redundancy they require for their network,” said Thomas Vito, vice president, strategy and business development at Uniti.

Vito concluded, “This deal secures a new logo for Uniti, adds another hyperscaler to our customer base, and again demonstrates successful lease-up on our national dark fiber network.”
