Fiber-optic innovations the focus of new conference

May 8, 2014
The Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit will look at cabling and networking technologies for data centers and enterprises.

Several of the conference sessions at the upcoming Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit will deal directly with optical cabling and networking technologies used in data center and enterprise environments. The summit, which will take place July 14 through 16 in Austin, TX, “will bring together thought leaders from the service-provider, major end user, technology development, academic and market-analysis realms for a concentrated, in-depth exchange of views that will highlight the critical innovations necessary to meet the near-term challenges in optical networking,” Lightwave said when announcing the conference’s content. Lightwave is a sister brand of Cabling Installation and Maintenance.

Lightwave’s editorial director and associate publisher Stephen Hardy commented, “What will be unique about the Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit is that we’ll present direct discussions between the people who use optical communication technology and the people who create it. Our conference committee has gathered a wide range of speakers from all corners of the community.”

One conference track will be dedicated to optical technologies serving data center and enterprise networks. The other conference track will be dedicated to carrier networks. Within the data center and enterprise track, the following topics will be presented.

  • 10-, 40-, 100-GbE Migration: The Role of Cabling—Presented by TE Connectivity’s director of global data center industry management, Kevin Ressler
  • Optics in the LAN—A penal including Fiber Optic Association president Jim Hayes, Sumitomo Electric Lightwave’s director of enterprise networks Kurt Templeman, The Light Brigade founder Larry Johnson, and TIA Fiber Optic Technology Consortium chair Rodney Casteel
  • Driving Down Data Center Costs Through New Designs in Fiber Management—Presented by Clearfield Inc. chief operating officer Johnny Hill
  • Intra-rack and Rack-to-Rack Connectivity Innovation—A panel including Facebook’s principal architect and design engineer Steven Cheng, Luxtera’s director of product marketing Brian Welch, 3M’s high-speed assembly business manager Jeff Bullion, Avago Technologies’ director of fiber-optic product strategy Mitchell Fields, and OneChip Photonics’ CEO Michael Lebby. The panel will be moderated by LightCounting founder and CEO Vladimir Kozlov.

Other enterprise and data center sessions include “Is it Time to Consider Building Your Own Network?” “Classifying the New Data Center Business Models,” “Network Security and Optical Communications,” “Data Center Design Innovations,” “How a Software-Defined Data Center Network Speeds Up Long Data Flows From Virtualization,” and “Innovation Pathways for Ethernet.”

Facebook’s Steve Cheng also will provide the conference’s keynote. On Monday, July 14, The Light Brigade will present two separate training sessions—one on enterprise and data center technologies and the other on carrier technologies.
