High-density fiber frame consolidates network patching in data centers

Leviton unveils its HDF3168 Fiber Distribution System.

Leviton has introduced its HDF3168 Fiber Distribution System, a high-density platform designed to consolidate fiber network patching in data centers.

Aimed at large enterprise and cloud data centers, as well as service providers and central office facilities, the HDF3168 system is used in the main distribution area (MDA) and serves as the main cross-connect patching location for all fiber channels. Taking up only a single two-foot square floor tile, the HDF3168 reduces space requirements and allows for easy access to the space around it and beneath a raised floor.

“Leviton designed the HDF3168 distribution system to provide the most fiber patching per square foot in the industry, greatly reducing space requirements and creating significant long-term cost savings,” comments Tony Yuen, senior product manager, fiber, for Leviton. “When used with Leviton 24-fiber MTP connectivity, the HDF3168 system offers an ideal migration path from 10G to 40G to 100G and beyond.”

According to the company, the HDF3168 fiber distribution system employs a unique patch deck design. One frame holds up to 22 decks, each configured with fiber cassettes, adapter plates or splice trays. The frame has the capacity for 3,168 LC connections or 15,552 connections using 24-fiber MTP. The systems is designed to work with Berk-Tek's Micro Data Center Plenum (MDP) cable, which offers an extremely small diameter for easier loading and maintenance.

Leviton says the new frame’s open design cuts time and labor for maintenance, as it allows unobstructed access to patch cord connections on the cassettes and adapter plates. It also includes rear doors that lock to protect trunk cabling and locking front doors (sold separately) that include one transparent side to allow visibility.

The HDF3168 is available through the company's distribution network. Leviton also offers an online Return on Infrastructure Investment (ROii) Calculator to compare the cost savings of the HDF3168 system over standard 19-inch data center racks.
