TIA publishes procedure standard for analog telephone performance

June 18, 2004 - Standard evaluates resistance and impedance.

The Telecommunications Industry Association has published a new standard that establishes criteria and procedures for evaluating the resistance and impedance performance of analog telephone and terminals.

The standard is Telecommunications -- Telephone Terminal Equipment -- Resistance and Impedance Performance Requirements for Analog Telephones, TIA-470.210-C.

The document is a revision of TIA/EIA-470-B.

This standard establishes criteria and procedures for evaluating the resistance and impedance performance of analog telephone and terminals connected to the public switched telephone network. The recommended on-hook requirements are written with a model of five customer premise equipment (CPE) attached to the customer interface and the minimum performance requirements are based on a model of three CPE.

The document proposes or references at least one measurement procedure for each technical requirement. However, these procedures are not exclusive. Any measurement procedure and equipment that can result in an identical measurement is considered valid. While the procedures may call out specific test points within the requirements, the full range of the requirements takes precedent over the test method.

TIA-470.210-C was created by TIA TR-41.3 Subcommittee on Analog and Digital Wireline Terminals and released in April.

The TIA is based in Arlington, VA. For more information visit
