NeoPhotonics marks QSFP-DD, OSFP 400ZR coherent modules for general availability

By STEPHEN HARDY -- NeoPhotonics (NYSE: NPTN) says its QSFP-DD and OSFP 400ZR pluggable coherent modules have reached general availability and are shipping to customers.

The optical transceivers have completed reliability qualification and have passed 2000 hours of High Temperature Operating Life (HTOL) as well as other salient tests per Telcordia requirements, the company adds.

The ClearLight 400ZR OSFP module began sampling in January 2020. Both the OSFP and QSFP-DD leverage NeoPhotonics’ silicon photonics Coherent Optical Subassembly (COSA) and Nano-ITLA tunable laser, as well as a merchant 7-nm node coherent DSP.

The company has demonstrated interoperability of its 400ZR pluggable optics with those of other vendors. NeoPhotonics also has demonstrated greater than 800-km reach via a ZR+ version of the QSFP-DD coherent optical transceiver. Both the QSFP-DD and OSFP modules will operate in such a mode.

Analysts expect deployment of 400ZR pluggables to begin their deployment ramp in the second half of this year, as multiple suppliers reach general availability. Data center interconnect is considered the primary initial application, but other uses present opportunity as well, according to Tim Jenks, chairman and CEO of NeoPhotonics.

“This demonstration of high data rates over longer distances shows the potential of these game-changing products, and we expect to see increasing deployment of coherent pluggable modules with different use cases, from data center interconnect to metro and regional applications as well as 5G wireless backhaul,” Jenks commented.

NeoPhotonics also offers coherent 400G capabilities in a CFP2-DCO module format.
