Transforming Connectivity Across the Americas

Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS) is advancing digital infrastructure throughout the Americas with its new TAM-1 subsea cable system — a next-generation network made to deliver high-capacity, low-latency connectivity between the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Colombia, the Caribbean, and other regions. According to a Fiber Broadband Association article on the subject, TAM-1 is the first scalable, neutral fiber system in decades to connect these regions.

High-Capacity Optical Design Powered by Ciena

Built for scalability and performance, TAM-1 will offer more than 650 Tbps of total system capacity across 24 southbound and 12 northbound fiber pairs. To achieve this, TAFS has chosen Ciena’s high-capacity optical technologies, including GeoMesh Extreme powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme and the 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS).
The open architecture supports spectrum sharing and flexible scalability, enabling operators to easily expand as connectivity demand continues to rise.

Enabling Fluid, Future-Ready Infrastructure

“At TAFS, we are leading a new generation of fluid connectivity for the Americas, one that redefines how networks are built, accessed, and scaled,” said Julio Bran, CEO of Trans Americas Fiber System. “As we pursue this vision, we are choosing Ciena — not only for their technology, but for their alignment with our mission to deliver flexible, efficient, and future-ready digital infrastructure.”

Spanning 7,200 kilometers with two diverse subsea routes, TAM-1 will enhance network resiliency while enabling low-latency connectivity for bandwidth-intensive applications such as AI, cloud computing, 5G, and edge services. Its programmable and automated design will support the growing data needs of enterprises and service providers across the Americas.

Meeting Surging Bandwidth Demand

“Trans Americas Fiber System’s TAM-1 cable system is designed to provide seamless and reliable connectivity across the trans-Americas region,” said Thomas Soerensen, Vice President of Global Submarine Solutions at Ciena. “Leveraging Ciena’s GeoMesh solution and optical networking expertise, TAM-1 will be poised to power the region’s surging bandwidth demands driven by cloud, video streaming, AI and more.”
