Graybar offering scholarships for construction trades

Jan. 15, 2020
The Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship is open to high school seniors or diploma-equivalent earners who plan to enroll full time in a community college, technical school, trade school or apprenticeship program.

Graybar recently launched the Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship. The scholarship program is open to high school students and those who recently have earned a high school equivalency diploma (GED, HiSET, TASC), who will enroll full time in a community college or trade school.

“Skilled workers are vital to the long-term success of the construction industry,” said Kathy Mazzarella, Graybar’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Because of labor shortages, many of our customers are struggling to keep up with demand, which ultimately impacts the entire supply chain. Through this scholarship program, our goal is to increase awareness of careers in the construction trades. We also want to remove barriers for young people with financial needs so they have the opportunity to pursue these careers.”

Students must intend to complete an associate degree, a pre-apprenticeship or an apprenticeship in the construction trades, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, or welding.

The scholarship awards each recipient up to $1000 per year and may be renewed for a second year, for a total of up to $2000. Graybar will provide up to 50 scholarships. “Eligibility, financial need, award recipients and award amount will be determined by the St. Louis Community Foundation,” Graybar said. “Graybar is not involved in selecting recipients.”

The Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship is a nationwide program. “While the scholarship is managed by the St. Louis Community Foundation and many of the schools on the application form are based in the St. Louis area, the scholarship is open for eligible students across the United States,” Graybar explains. “Our intent is for it to be awarded across all districts and for local and district management to play a role in presenting scholarships to students.”
