Rack-Scale Fiber-Connectivity Platform is Built for AI’s Density
CommScope recently introduced Rapid Fiber Connect, which it describes as “a rack-scale, plug-and-play platform, purpose-built for ultra-dense AI data centers.” The company adds that Rapid Fiber Connect simplifies cabling, testing, deployment, and scaling through flexible panel designs and integrated, preconfigured, prelabeled pigtails that allow for GPU and switch connections to be made and integrated off-site. On-site, the platform’s mass-insert connectors accelerate installation and system turnup with fewer connections.
Two panels are centerpiece components of the platform: the GPU Panel (pictured) and the Switch Panel. Each is “uniquely designed for speed and simplicity,” the company says. “The platform consists of these panels with preinstalled output cabling and trunk cable terminated with Mass Insert connectors.” The GPU panel has a front-access-only design with 960-fiber capacity, ideal for high-density racks. It is optimized for 72-GPU designs. The Switch panel offers front and/or rear access, supporting 1728 fibers. It is stackable to achieve ultra-high fiber density.
Both panel types offer spare ports, connections for Mass Insert connectors, and integrated output pigtails. Pigtails and connector legs are preconfigured to match the port locations for the most common AI designs. Legs are prelabeled and color-coded to reduce off-site prep and cabling time. Once the rack is cabled and validated, the output cables can stay in place for transport, which reduces on-site deployment time.
CommScope says the platform “empowers the AI data center revolution” in the following ways.
- Accelerated deployment: Preconfigured, prelabeled and factory-terminated pigtail outputs reduce rack assembly time and opportunity for error. The panel accepts Mass Insert connectors, allowing rack-to-rack connectivity, reducing the number of clicks by an order of 12 compared to individual MPO12/8 connectors. Trunk cables can also be deployed onsite prior to roll-in for even faster deployments.
- Optimized for AI architectures: The platform aligns with modern AI reference designs, offering flexible panel options, optimized connector layouts, and integrated spare capacity. Its optimized panel port counts, locations and types support various trunk and patching fiber counts. Its integrated spare panel ports enable the repair of broken links without pulling new cable. Multimode and singlemode solutions are available.
- Ultra-high density: The platform features a 1RU front access panel with a maximum density of 960 fibers to connect GPUs and CPUs in common 72-GPU rack-scale systems. Its 1RU front and rear panels support up to 1728 fibers. Mass Insert connectors deliver 12 times density over MPO 12/8, and the solution is stackable to service ultra-high-density switch racks.
- Risk mitigation through preconfiguration: Off-site configuration reduces on-site manual labor, cost, and potential risk by leveraging prelabeled pigtails and legs configured to align with the rack design. Its front access panel prevents potential mistakes caused by working in deep, overcrowded racks. Once configured, the rack can roll in fully assembled for simplified Mass Insert connection.
